Smith, Alfred E(manuel)
(30 dic. 1873, Nueva York, N.Y., EE.UU.–4 oct. 1944, ciudad de Nueva York).

Político estadounidense. Después de trabajar en la pescadería de Fulton para ayudar a mantener a su familia, inició su carrera política con un puesto que le ofreció Tammany Hall (1895). En la asamblea del estado (1903–15) llegó a presidente, luego ocupó cargos políticos municipales. Como gobernador de Nueva York (1919–20, 1923–28) trabajó por mejores viviendas, la protección de la infancia y un gobierno eficiente. En 1928 ganó la candidatura presidencial del Partido Demócrata, el primer postulante católico en aspirar al cargo, pero Herbert Hoover lo derrotó con facilidad. Más tarde se opuso a los programas del New Deal de Franklin D. Roosevelt y en 1936 y 1940 apoyó a los candidatos presidenciales republicanos.
